For secondhand and rare booksellers
Sell used and rare books online the way people browse your shop
A secondhand bookshop is made for browsing: you go in for one thing and leave with three. InShelf brings that to your Shopify store with a 3D bookcase where every shelf is a subject or an era, and every copy can be pulled out and bought.
What changes when every book is a single copy
Selling used books online isn't like selling new ones. Each copy is its own product, with its own condition, edition and price. A few habits make a big difference, with or without an app:
- Photograph the actual copy. Collectors want to see the dust jacket, the wear and the spine, not a stock image.
- Put condition and edition in the description: first edition, signed, ex-library, foxing, missing jacket. Be specific.
- Track quantity in Shopify and set each copy to 1, so the same book can't be sold twice.
- Group stock into collections by subject, era, publisher series or provenance. That's how people browse a shop like yours.
For older books without an ISBN, the author field matters even more. See how to add author and ISBN to Shopify books.
How InShelf shows a secondhand catalog
Your photos become spines
InShelf takes the color from each cover photo and sets the title and author on the spine in the font you choose, with readable contrast. A faded green cloth binding gets a faded green spine.
Shelves by subject or era
Choose which collections become shelves and in what order: Travel, Poetry, Nineteenth century, Signed copies.
Badges that matter
Mark books as Signed or New arrivals, and show discounts right on the cover.
Sort each shelf
By recommended, price, A–Z or color. Sorting by color turns a shelf of mixed bindings into something people stop to look at.
No photo yet? Still on the shelf
Books without an image get a typographic cover with their title and author, so you can list first and photograph later.
When a copy sells
The shelf shows the books that are active and published to your online store, and it stays in sync with the changes you make in Shopify. A copy that sells out stays on the shelf marked as sold out, and you can have InShelf move sold-out books to the end of each shelf. To take it off the shelf, archive the product or turn it off in InShelf. InShelf doesn't keep a separate inventory to maintain.
Shoppers pull out a book, see its cover, title, author and price, and add it to the cart without leaving the page. The cart is your theme's own, so checkout works exactly as it does now.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell used books on Shopify?
Yes. Each copy is a product with its own photos, condition notes and price. Tracking quantity and setting it to 1 is the usual way to handle single copies. Our guide on selling books on Shopify covers the setup.
Do my books need an ISBN?
No. InShelf builds each book from the Shopify product: its cover, title, author and price. A book printed long before ISBNs shows up like any other.
Can customers search inside the bookshelf?
Not yet. The bookshelf is for browsing; your store's own search keeps working as usual for people looking for a specific title.
I have thousands of books. Will that work?
The Pro plan has no book limit. You can also put only some collections on the shelves, such as recent arrivals or your best subjects, and keep the rest in the regular store.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. Customers pinch to zoom in, tap a book to open it and swipe to the next one. On mobile the scene is lighter so it loads comfortably.
